Are You Funding the War Waged Against You?

Are You Funding the War Waged Against You?

What are you really funding? It’s a question we don’t ask nearly enough. As Christians, we’re called to live out our faith in every area of life—even our investments. But here’s the kicker: could your portfolio be funding what you stand against?

Let’s find out—with a touch of humor, biblical wisdom, support from other sources, and a side of reality check.

The Spiritual Battle in Your Wallet

Every day, we’re in a spiritual battle. The enemy isn’t playing nice. He uses lies, deception, and temptation to wage war against truth. But here’s the gut-punch question: are we unknowingly paying him to do it?

As Martin Luther once said, “There are three conversions necessary: the conversion of the heart, the mind, and the purse.” We often focus on the first two but forget the third. Yet how we steward our finances is a reflection of our faith. Matthew 6:21 reminds us: “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”

And this isn’t just a personal matter—it’s a global issue. A 2021 report by Inspire Insight revealed that 90% of traditional investments are connected to industries that actively oppose biblical values. This includes:

  • Pornography (The National Center on Sexual Exploitation identifies pornography as a driver of human trafficking and sexual violence, deeply violating God’s design for purity.
  • Human trafficking (The International Labour Organization estimates over 40 million people are trapped in modern slavery—many through industries profiting from exploitation.
  • Abortion activism (Planned Parenthood, one of the largest abortion providers, receives substantial funding from public companies that Christians may unknowingly invest in.
  • Social activism (Major corporations often use profits to advocate for agendas that conflict with biblical views on marriage and sexuality.
  • Foreign adversarial enterprises (A 2023 U.S. report highlighted how investments in certain foreign companies contribute to national security risks and human rights abuses.

So, let’s be honest: are we funding the enemy’s playbook? Imagine realizing your 401(k) is like the credit card paying for the villain’s evil lair in a superhero movie. Not the kind of plot twist you want.

Faith-driven investing isn’t a fringe concept—it’s a movement. Larry Burkett, founder of Crown Financial Ministries, emphasized, “How we use our money shows what we truly value. Godly stewardship requires aligning finances with Kingdom principles.”

Additionally, The Wall Street Journal recently reported on the growing trend of values-based investing, noting that “investors are increasingly prioritizing ethical portfolios that reflect their personal convictions.” Yet the Christian financial sector remains vastly underrepresented despite the substantial wealth it holds.

Relax. No one’s here to shame you. We’ve all been there. The good news is you can take control right now. It’s fast, easy, and free.

Proverbs 27:23 reminds us: “Be sure you know the condition of your flocks, give careful attention to your herds.” Modern translation: know what’s in your portfolio.

Turning Faith into Financial Action

If you discover your investments don’t align with your faith, don’t panic—pivot. Together, we can redirect your resources to support causes that honor God’s Kingdom.

In a 2023 CNBC feature on faith-based investing, financial expert Rachel McClain highlighted that “biblical investing isn’t just ethical—it’s smart. Aligning with values often leads to stable, long-term growth because it focuses on industries that prioritize human flourishing and ethical practices.”

Think of it like swapping out a fast-food diet for farm-to-table meals. It’s healthier for your soul and your finances. Aligning your portfolio with biblical principles doesn’t mean sacrificing returns—it means making an eternal impact while you invest.

Psalm 24:1 reminds us: “The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it.” It’s His money, so let’s use it His way.

A Sobering Perspective: Would God Approve of Your Investments?

A few years ago, I sat down with Robert Netzly, the founder of Inspire Investments and Inspire Advisors. During our conversation, he shared an illustration that stopped me in my tracks:

“Imagine you’re sitting across the table from God,” he said, “and you’re explaining your investment choices to Him. You start enthusiastically:

‘Lord, look at this portfolio! On this investment, I made 6%—it’s tied to abortion providers. On another, I earned 18%—thanks to a company profiting from pornography. And here’s one supporting organizations that promote ideas contrary to Your Word. Aren’t You proud of my financial savvy?’

God looks at you with sadness, shakes His head, and says, ‘No.’”

That mental picture hit me like a ton of bricks. Would I ever want to stand before God and justify funding things that go against His heart, His will, or His character? Of course not! It’s not just about good returns—it’s about good stewardship.

This isn’t a hypothetical exercise; it’s a real challenge to align our earthly investments with eternal values. Colossians 3:23 reminds us: “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters.” This includes how we handle the resources He’s entrusted to us.

The question is simple: if you wouldn’t present your investments to God with confidence, why continue funding them?

Seriously, do you want to look back and realize you bankrolled what grieved God’s heart? Or would you rather hear Him say, “Well done, good and faithful servant” (Matthew 25:21)?
